Mentoplasty

(Chin Augmentation, Chin Implant)

The chin is one of the main points of reference in the aesthetic study of the face. The nose, the eyes, the mouth, etc., make up a harmonious set, which is the reason why they are to be treated together.

A chin surgery may be used to correct a protruding lower jaw or a small or receding chin. This latter case is the most common and the one we are going to describe below.

Where will the scars be located?

Normally, intervention takes place from inside the mouth. In very exceptional cases, a small incision is made under the chin.

What type of anesthesia is required?

This is an operation that may be performed under local anesthesia, but is can also be carried out under general anesthesia is combined with other surgeries.

What will the surgeon do? What will he place on my chin to project it?

We may perform two types of surgery: the first one does not involve the use of implants and is used to advance part of the chin. It is more complex than the procedure using silicone.
The second type is carried out inserting a silicone implant, which may vary in size, according to the surgeon’s consideration. This implant may be carved by the surgeon or a ready-made implant can be used.

Can this silicone piece give cancer?

Not at all… solid silicone has been used in plastic surgery for over thirty-five years and thousands of patients have been exposed to it without any complication.

What pain like in the postoperative period?

The pain resulting pain may be easily treated with common pain-killers.

What care is to be taken?

You will have to use an antiseptic mouthwash every four hours for a week after surgery, as well as an antibiotic, as a prophylactic measure. The adhesive tapes placed on the skin to fix the implant are removed in a week.

How long will I have to rest?

On the following day after surgery, you may resume work without major worries. You will be able to speak with very little discomfort.

Will I have suture marks?

The stitches are sewn up in inside the mouth and they are absorbable, which means that there is no need to remove them. They will fall by themselves.

How much will my physiognomy change?

As we said before, your appearance will improve thanks to the correction of your chin, since the jaw and the nose, the eyes and the mouth as a whole are points of facial reference and harmony.

Can this procedure be associated to another?

A mentoplasty (chin surgery) is usually associated to a rhinoplasty (nose surgery).

What should I take into account before the operation?

You must tell your surgeon of any dental problem you have. This way, he will coordinate efforts directly with your dentist.

What should I take into account after the operation?

  • Follow a soft diet for three to five days, preferably cold or room-temperature food.
  • Keep the bandages and adhesive tapes for at least two weeks.
  • Maintain good mouth hygiene.
  • Follow strictly your doctor’s instructions and take the medications prescribed.
